5 Ways To Be Healthier At Work
One of the hardest things to do is to keep your health goals in mind when you’re at work. All of a sudden, what you’re eating doesn’t really matter anymore amongst the bustle and stress of a full-time job. Therefore, people tend to slack on their health goals once they hit the office.
But there are actually ways you can focus on a healthy lifestyle — even at work.
Below are the top 5 tips and tricks if you’re looking for a better way to keep your lifestyle healthy, even at work:
No matter what, eat breakfast
Before you start to complain that you don’t have enough time, hear me out. I get it. Waking up later in the morning so you can catch up on some extra z’s is totally normal. But if it means that you’re skipping out on your breakfast, it’s not a good idea. You’ve all heard the saying: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”
True, but it’s also important if you don’t want to keep snacking on unhealthy foods all day at work. This means you can just have a quick, nutritious breakfast that you can eat as you walk out the door. If you don’t have enough time, you don’t have to have a difficult meal. Just keep it healthy, and keep it filling.
Keep a water drinking goal
I don’t need to tell you that drinking water throughout the day is an ideal way to keep your body healthy. We all know this, but yet a lot of us don’t partake in drinking a gallon of water a day.
If you’re trying to be healthier, you need to drink more water, both at home and at work. To help you keep your mind on track, think about setting a goal and seeing if you complete it each day. For example, if you want to drink a gallon of water a day, keep a little tally in your daily planner or notebook as you drink your water. At the end of the day, see if you drank a gallon. This will keep your mind active and actually conscious about how much water you drink.
If you want to eat a cookie, eat a cookie
A lot of people seem to think that, when they’re dieting or trying to eat healthily, they can’t eat anything that’s considered “bad” food. So, that means if there’s a birthday party in the office and someone has cake, or someone brings in cookies for whatever celebration it is, you can’t eat anything.
I’d like to say I think you should eat whatever you want to eat. If you tell yourself that you can’t have that one cookie at work, you’re just going to feel bad. You’ll just end up longing for that one cookie. Then, there’s a very real chance you’ll go home and end up eating something unhealthy anyway because you’ve been craving that cookie all day — and there’s the very real chance you’ll overeat and indulge a bit more.
The key to being healthy is moderation. I’m not saying go and eat the whole tray of cookies. But moderating your food, and telling yourself that there’s really no “bad” foods, can really help you become healthier in the long run.
Plus, cookies are great, aren’t they?
Try to walk as much as possible
Just because you’re at work doesn’t mean you have to be behind a desk all day. Well, you might be behind a desk all day, but you can still get some walking in.
Start your day by parking farther from your office in the parking lot, getting those extra steps in. Or, if you live close to your workplace or take the public transportation, try to somehow get those extra steps in by walking to work or getting off at the stop prior to your normal stop.
If you drink a lot of water (which you should, as I mentioned above), you’re probably going to be walking to the bathroom a lot, which can help you get your needed walking time in. There are ways to get some added steps, you just have to put your mind to it.
Eat healthy with your coworkers
It’s easier to stick to your goals when you have friends or coworkers that have the same intentions in mind. There are probably some people that you work with that are also on a quest to try and be as healthy as possible. Start a group of coworkers that help each other out in your quest to be healthy. If you all go out for lunch together, pick a restaurant where you know there will be healthy options.
It’s really helpful to have coworkers and friends that are reaching towards the same goal as you. It helps keep your motivation up at all times, and it really helps you stick to your word on trying to better yourself and be as healthy as possible.
