Getting a good night’s sleep is easier said than done. There are a ton of tricks that people swear by to fall asleep faster — and we’ve heard them all. But there are also simple solutions that you should NEVER do when trying to fall asleep.
The number one thing you should never do when trying to sleep? Think about falling asleep. If you psych yourself up and mentally prepare yourself for bed, there’s the very real chance that you could psych yourself out of it.
Trust us, we think it sounds kinda crazy, too. But weirdly, it also makes sense. How many of you have done everything right, and yet you can’t seem to fall asleep until after 3 a.m.?
Matthew Walker, the director of Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, says that the only way to really cure this is to immediately get out of bed and walk into another room. Once there, read or meditate until you feel like you’re going to fall asleep again. Then, immediately go back to your bedroom and try again. However, you CANNOT go on your phone or scroll through Twitter this time. Keep those phones and laptops away from you, as they will just keep you up even longer than you planned. And that’s no fun.
Walker also says that this can happen because your brain thinks that your bedroom and your bed are equivalent to being awake, and no longer equivalent to rest. He says that you need to trick your body and mind into believing that your bed is for being asleep again. Therefore, if you stay awake in your bed longer than normal, it could potentially be counterintuitive.
Trust us, we think it’s crazy, too. However, that’s not gonna stop us from trying it out! After all, if we can get more sleep than we’re getting now, we’ll do it.
